Newcastle United & Aston Villa Fans, Unite As A Tribute

villa newcastleOver the last few seasons, Aston Villa and Newcastle United have had a little animosity towards each other, I think it’s fair to say? It all started when the Toon Army was relegated on the last day of the 2008/09 Premiership football season at Villa Park.

As football fans do, they wallow in the turmoil of other football fans misery and the Villa Park faithful were no different to any other. What really struck me on this day was how lack lustre the Newcastle team played; if I’m right, I think they still had a chance of staying up, providing they got a win at Villa Park and other results went their way?

But recent sad events of Two True Football Fans from Newcastle United, John Alder and Liam Sweeney who died along with 296 others when their Malaysian Airways flight was shot down over Ukraine. They were travelling to watch their beloved football team play a pre-season tour in New Zealand. Sadly they never made it there.

I for one and I’m sure I speak for all Villa fans, will gladly observe any tribute or minutes applause given to these two poor souls. Our differences must be put aside for a brief moment if there is to be any tribute.

If there are any Newcastle Fans reading this blog post, please let me know what you might have planned in terms of a tribute via my contact form and I will post and tweet the details for all to see.

  1. I think they did the tribute last week at their ground. No need for another one really, we aren’t liverpool.

    • Your entitled to your opinion but I was hoping we could all pull together on this one. I presume you’re a Aston Villa fan and I would like to remind you of our season long tribute to Stan Petrov which Newcastle fans amongst many others respected.

  2. Its not for nufc fans to be demanding of others, I guess we can best hope that others will not disrespect our wishes to recognise a cause that surely echoes across all clubs. This is simply recognition of the lengths that many fans go to support their team and reminds everyone, clubs included, of the extreme journeys that people undertake, over many decades, for the love of their club. This is a story that is as much about any Monday night trip to Southampton or Carlisle as it is about a friendly in New Zealand.

  3. Their fans can do whatever they want, but I will definitely not be taking part. Football fans die in many ways literally every day – some while at the stadium even. Are we really going to start commemorating everything?! Fair enough if it was one of their player, but it is not.
I will be supporting Villa 100% and I hope we hammer them on Saturday. Newcastle fans have taken an excessive and unwarranted dislike to us over the last few years which I find amusing, I see no reason for us to unite with them.

  4. That’s because you are pond life! Even our bitterest arch rivals Sunderland have put tribalism aside, and covered themselves in huge respect. I live in Brum and people wonder why I dislike Villa more than Sunderland (even though some of my best friends support Villa, and I would go to the end of the Earth for them); people like you are the answer! Most Villa fans are great people. Unfortunately, the minority, which you appear to belong to are a disgrace to your club!!!

  5. I’ve not got a problem with the Geordies. Great people who have always looked after me whenever I’ve stopped up in Newcastle. The chap who runs “The Back Page” in Newcastle always makes us welcome in the pub where he DJ’s on a match day.

  6. I’m not at all supprised by some of the comments on here from some Villa fans, they’re the minority, belive me.

Yes fans from clubs die every day but not in this manner, it’s a damn shame.

I want all the Newcastle supporters to know, that if there is a 17 minute round of applause for these two football fans who were killed, we the Villa Fans will be right behind you, you’ll see.

    RIP Alder & Sweeney.

  7. I have been supporting villa since 1974 when vic crow was the manager I don’t know whether it is a society thing but I must admit there is a small minority of d–kh–ds who mascarade as villa fans nowadays who are embarrassing…..but in saying that I would prefer to be a villa fan than a ugly knuckle dragging troll looking bluenose
