My Response To Dennis Mortimer And The Three Tweets That Pretty Much Say It All For Me

That Old Chestnut CardDennis, you are a club legend, but it’s really time to put that old chestnut to bed! O’Neill had his time at Villa many years ago, he didn’t do too bad, but to keep bagging on about this same old, “It’s O’Neill’s fault for everything,” is very tiresome and counter productive for our club to move forward.

These three tweets below pretty much say it all for me, with some quality humour from Michael Lockey. UTV

  1. O’Neill wasted millions on transfer fees.
Countless more on massive, long term wages for these players. Some of whom he rarely if ever played.
All this went unchecked by Lerner and crippled our club for years to come. Lerner never regained his appetite.

Reflect on the waste O’Neill inflicted and the distinctly average return we saw in the league. The team was vastly funded, but achieved only top finishes. Our best chances of anything were in the cups and MON even opted to play the kids in the Europa after negotiating the group stage.

It isn’t ALL MON’s fault, but he played a massive role in how we got to where we are today.

  2. Forget the past, the criticism, all the negativity. Write about the future, new owners and new players.

The air of gloom has to stop NOW. As a blogger if you can’t find anythimg positive to write don’t bother. The growing cancer of impending doom is spread by poor writing and following the lines of the national and local rubbish press.

Please look to the future and write original thoughts that can inspire.

  3. For Goodness sake lets move on. When M.O. was boss we were ahead of Spurs
in the race for the top 4. When M.O. heard Lerners vision for the future of course he jumped ship and who wouldn’t. If your pointing the finger of blame then Lerner Lambert Fox & co are a country mile ahead of M.O. Wake up to the facts Dennis other wise we will start blaming you for retiring when you really should have played on for another 10 years.

  4. Like so many of you, the only reason I carried on going to the Villa last season is because I love the place, love the passion of our fans who I tip my hat to for keeping such a good sense of humour. Next season I want to be entertained, I’m not bothered regards Championship football, after all, that’s where we deserve to be (at best). What I want is pride, a belief, an aim, and a squad of devoted players committed to the shirt. I want players that I look forward to watching, a team sheet that interests me! As for the first step, obviously sell the club, employ a manager with vision, the ability to change a game, a passion to put our Villa where we can be, challenging for that Championship top spot. Is Pearson the man, my opinion, not long term, I genuinely don’t believe he has the ability to be a game changer, especially against the top managers. Moyes offers a better stability to the club as a whole, a better management structure and I believe he is craving a club he can rebuild and call his own, creating a compact, solid foundation. Moyes will attract a blend of players to our club who will be hungary for success, a set of players who will listen to his guidance and take us to happier shores rather than this merry bunch of pirates who have plundered this great club.

  5. Martin O’Neil’s fault? Don’t think so !. 3 consecutive top 6 finishes and then time to ADD QUALITY to team. What happened.. he had meeting with lerner in summer and was obviously told that more money (especially from sold players) was on . Lerner obviously broke this (o’neill later given compensation) and Lerner would not push villa to the next level. The rest is history with Lerners only interest in MAKING MONEY out of villa. Glad to see back of him and hope he LOSES his precious money.lets hope that future owners have a genuine interest in team.it will take about three seasons to get back were we belong

  6. O’Neill absolutey responsible! Bought a shed load of squad players (who never played) for too much on big wages. We’ve never recovered from that. But Lerner sanctioned all that spending & then moved goalposts (something we now know he is fond of doing) on MON when he didn’t get the expected returns. The 2 should be equally to blame. One is long gone, the other is hopefully not far behind. When Lerner does actually do one we can move on, look to the future, etc. Until then, perfectly justifiable for Dennis & whoever else to point out the facts as they are.
