It Was Tim Sherwood’s Tactics And Substitutions That Lost Us The Match Today

Tim-Sherwood tacticsWe always bloody well do it don’t we!!! We could have been four goals up today and we still would have lost, or is that how you think when you lose from a winning position? I mean I still can’t believe we lost, I’m so shell-shocked!!!

But I believe this loss could have been avoided if Sherwood would have made better use of his substitutions. For me, Bacuna should have had his carcass taken off within the first half after he lost the ball for the third time to put our goal under pressure.

Gil came off injured and was replaced with Jordan Ayew who went over on the left-wing for crying out loud!!! We did lose something when the little Spaniard came off, but I believe he should have been replaced with another midfielder, Veretout would have been ideal not Ayew.

With all the emotions of Jack Grealish scoring his first senior goal for Villa, It was quite evident to me that the young lad was flagging in the second half; he also needed to come off. This was his first game back from injury and the kid needs to be looked after by the management.

Listening to BBC Five live driving back up the M6, the radio presenter said that Sherwood would probably go into the changing room and tell our players a few home truths, and that’s fine, but Sherwood needs to be told a few himself also, because I put this loss down to him and his bad decision-making.

Decisions decisions decisions, and there were many more that Sherwood should have made today. This isn’t an anti Sherwood post, and I’m glad he’s managing our football club, but he really needs to get his tactics right as football games evolve. This is an area that’s letting his management down, and if he doesn’t address it, then I will continue to point his or any other person’s shortcomings out who is associated with our club. UTV

  1. Tactical naivety I’m afraid.

We threw it away at Palace after dominating the first period. But Pardew made substitutions and changed their formation at the break and we failed to respond.

At home to Sunderland it was similar story. Crusing at the break they changed their formation and tactics and we really couldn’t cope and ended up losing two points that were all but in the bag.

Today was a similar story. Half-time substitution and as soon as I saw they had brought Nathan Dyer on I knew we were in trouble.

Losing Carles Gil was massive and I’m not convinced he needed to come off. Once he left the pitch we went flat.

I agree Grealish was flagging but Veretout would have been the best option. Ayew isn’t cutting it yet and Hutton really didn’t look up to it.

I would have moved Richards to right back and brought Clark on.

And as for Brad Guzan, what was he doing?

  2. Gutted Snatching defeat from the hands of victory.ee just could not cope in last 20 minutes of foxes onslaught.Somebody need to tske charge on the pitch.leadership was absent.I realise iy is work in progress are we in for another roller coaster season. I can see ehat sherwood is trying to achieve.players need to toughen up. this is the premier league for crying out loud. not my grandma”s knitting group.

  3. Great article. Nice to read someone speaking sense and understanding the game. Used to read vital villa but they’ve lost the plot.
Sherwood has the cheek to blame individual errors?!?!
If we encourage them to besiege us for half an hour through the manager’s tactics then they’ll score sooner or later.
Sherwood needs to look in the mirror and stop blaming others.
He does his homework and sets us up well ( or someone does) then EVERY GAME, the oppo change at half time and they get the better of us AND we can’t change it.
This leads me to believe that he doesn’t know what’s going on without stats/video evidence/someone else telling him.

  4. I’ve got to agree , sherwood messed up our middle was over run and he didn’t change it , I think unless he starts to see the game as it is and not how he wants it to be he won’t be around for long , if he had parked the bus for the last 25 mins he would have walked away with three point today , instead he blames individual errors for the defeat , on one hand I’d say yes Tim your right but on the other I would say that you contributed to the loss , we needed gana today who was missed that’s for sure ,but that’s no excuse . You don’t have time Tim I’m affraid you must learn quickly or you too could be going out through villas relvolving door ……….I hope not but this is football after all

  5. You have to question the input of the more experienced Ray Wilkins sitting alongside Sherwood. Why is he there, If not to impart the wisdom of his experience ?
If you accept Gil was injured, there were still other changes that changed the game for us in a negative way. I never feel comfortable us defending even a 2 goal lead. We look more assured and dangerous as an attacking team and have the personnel to frighten any opposition.
Finally I have to point out that whilst Guzan is partly to blame for the final goal, his partner in crime was surely the comical Hutton who clumsily knocked Dyer into Guzan for no good reason.

  6. Echo what’s been said. I’m sure a few spurs fans said the same, in terms if there being no plan B. The changes in tactics and personel (from both dug outs) killed us. I like Sherwood, but It’s becoming a familiar tale, ‘played well but…’
This is what gets said about teams that end up relegated. Also echo the comment that we seem to have one good half then the opposition come out pepper us and there’s no way to withstand it. We lack steel and are conceding goals far too easily. It all points to tactical nativity whether it is the players, manager or both.
Gestede, Ayew aren’t up to it and we haven’t got time for them to get up to speed, we are lacking leaders that drag you to a point, to 3 points, a Kevin Richardson, an andy Townsend, a petrov etc. Gana was missed, and as much as he’s been criticised Gabby when he came off as he was stretching the game and gave us an outlet. Westwood, likeable kid but why is he taking set pieces, you can probably count on 1 hand how many we’ve scored from
In the last 2 years, not utilising the height we possess in the team. We are seeing already how much were missing Benteke aerially as he bully’s people and turns average balls into goals. The next 2 games are massive in my eyes because aside from being Derbies they are winnable games and will determine which direction we are really going in terms of our season & it will raise big questions about sherwoods credentials should we lose one and then the discontent starts even at this early stage.

  7. Gana was a big miss no doubt about it. Veretout probably should have come on for gil, would’ve shored things up a bit. Ayew looks terrible right now to be honest, and gestede looks lumbering. Sherwood’s in game management isn’t up to par as if yet, let’s hope this is due to his relative lack of experience as a manager and not just an area he is lacking in. What on earth was guzan doing for their winner? Never even attempted to use his hands, just turned his back…..very strange when you watch the replay. Positives for me were Richards gil and grealish. Sinclair struggled to get involved.

  8. Richards was all over the place. Richards fault for one of goals. Watched ball go past him in 6 yard area. Not much better for winner as he watched ball go over him.
    Gil could have stayed on.
Clark should not have been dropped. Clark gets blamed too easily. Yet hes the best central defender we have.
Sherwood again thinks hes some kind of genius tactician. He is not. We are going nowhere with the Cockney mafia

  9. i totally agree with all the above comments however, it’s great to see both Gill and Grealish responding to the managers call to score goals. My question is why didn’t we buy a proper, seasoned striker in the transfer window.

  10. The chase is on and it is time that Bradley Wiggins recognized his inept appliance of subs. Why are we not playing to our strengths? He sanctioned Guzan after Man City and still brought him back. This keeper is culpable for two critical goals so far this season which ended up costing us the points. We warned Tim about messing with the defence selection to no avail. You would have thought that after the Palace debacle he would have learned from his mistakes. If the supporters can see the obvious the supporters why can’t Tim?
