Watching Villa play against PSG in the first leg of our Champions League tie, the tension was unreal. Ally McCoist and Rio Ferdinand were on commentary, but because I was so wound up, my senses were heightened that I started noticing everything—even stuff happening in the background of the TV studio.
Villa made a fantastic start, grabbing the first goal and giving us that feeling: maybe… just maybe… this could be our night. But in this big Champions league quarter-final cup tie, that psychological weight was weighing heavy on the Villa players for all to see. PSG responded, got back into the game, and suddenly, the momentum shifted.
Then came the 48th minute—PSG’s second goal. I felt deflated. But what made it worse? In the background, I could hear what sounded like Rio Ferdinand celebrating. Whoops, whoas, the whole lot. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. I wasn’t impressed—at all.
We could see that PSG were now controlling the game, and there’s Ferdinand, having the time of his life in the background. Right next to him was Ally McCoist, who—based on footage from the match—actually looked like he felt for Villa fans. Meanwhile, FerdaNumpty was acting like he’d scored the goal himself.
Look, I’ve seen plenty of world-class goals scored against Villa and England. I’ve never had a problem with our own fans appreciating great football—credit where it’s due. But if I stood in the Holt End and celebrated like that for the opposition, I’d fully expect to be asked, “Who the hell is this kn0bhead?” UTV
