Aston Villa vs Manchester City
So which is the bigger club, and why do I bring this up now. Well it started with a tweet the other day from me, and in that tweet I asked The Villa faithful not to get so worried about the fixtures we have at the start of the season. A bit of panic seemed to set in and quite a few of The Villa Faithful couldn’t see where our first point’s were going to come from. So I pointed out that we are Aston Villa and that we should never be be scared of anyone. And I referred to those clubs that we must play at the start of the season as, So Called Big Boys.
Then I received a Tweet form a Manchester City Fan Saying, “do you mean us ? You surely do. Sorry mate, I Surely Didn’t Mean You. In my eyes they are not a bigger club than Aston Villa, and even though this post is about Aston Villa and Manchester City, I would go so far as to say that we are just slightly bigger than Chelsea to.
Money Doesn’t Make You Big Club
Money doesn’t make you a big club In Manchester City’s case, yes your club can be a rich club, by were you generate a lot of money through self sufficiency, marketing, TV and sponsorship and a whole host of other things to create wealth for your club, so you can buy the best players. But through a Sugar Daddy, an Arab or Russian Billionaire, I don’t think so.
Where would Manchester City be if the chain of events hadn’t meant that a Billionaire from the Middle East hadn’t arrived at there club. I tell you where they would be, fighting relegation between the top three divisions, like they always did.
And what if the Billionaires were to pull the plug on these clubs, well I’m sure you can work that one out for yourself.
They’re going to throw all sorts of arguments in my face to say they are a bigger club than The Villa. But through all the money being thrown around these clubs, we’ve managed to stay in the Premiership and even compete. Just imagine if Hull City AFC had a Billionaire, would that make them a bigger club than Aston Villa? And that’s why Manchester City will never be a bigger club than The Villa.
Don’t get me started with this subject and artificial big clubs they really piss me off , you have said it all Glenn villa are a bigger club than man city but I would like to broaden the debate and have a bit of fun and I will give you my list in order the biggest clubs in the premiership 1st man united 2nd Liverpool 3rd arsenal 4th spurs, villa, everton , and maybe Newcastle you can argue till the cows come home who 4th is they all lay claims , I try and base it on all factors i.e history , trophies , fan base , stadium , some young lads these days need to know football didn’t start with the conception of the premiership.
After taking into account of what Batfastard said ie history trophies etc the only two clubs that qualify at this moment in time are Manchester United and Arsenal
Money makes little clubs look big ie man city, chelsea, put the owners of them clubs with the likes of crystal palace, hull, west brom, norwich etc they wil b big clubs only cuz they av backing of big money no history at all in any of em its a business now with man u,man city, chelsea, who av all got no youth in there squad.
I would argue that whether or not a club is “big” is entirely a matter of perspective. How do you even judge how big a club is? Honours? Historically Villa have won a lot and I’d agree. Stadium size? Again villa are up there although not above Man City.
From my perspective, as someone who is a lot younger than many of the people on here, I have never known any “big teams” outside of Manchester United, Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal probably in that order.
All in all I would say it depends on what your criteria is, mine being success and overall profile in recent years and as such Villa, in my opinion are a small club by premier league standards.
Bring on the hate 🙂
surely with your blue and white goggles on how can villa be a small club so you must put villa alongside clubs like wba , crystal palace , Norwich , wigan etc clubs who struggle to get 25 000 matchday , surely the most ardent bluenose would admit we are bigger than these clubs
I’d put you above the latter three in your posts and put you around the same level as West Brom.
As a villa fan we can’t keep harping on about a league and European cup 30 years ago.
Since those days we had 2 runners up spots which we ballsed up drastically. And 2 fantastic league cup wins. One against probably the best mufc team in recent history, but lets be honest. In current days of football. Even Chelsea were winning trophies before the Russian sugar daddy arrived. He just took them to the next level, mcfc on the other hand have an exiting future ahead. And in the current climate have the pulling power and potential to be very big, but they will never be in the same league as mufc, barca, Madrid, Milan, bayern,
Lets be honest in last 30 year avfc & mcfc have been in a similar boat and have very similar history. Pre 82, avfc were one of the biggest clubs, last 3 seasons mcfc have been getting bigger, At the end of the day. Success is measured on Trophies so historically avfc are the bigger club, but the future looks brighter for mcfc in present circumstance.
Great debate. The table in below link speaks for itself.

For the love of football…villa are the bigger club…city are a buying club…villa are building from the roots…which when they win something it will mean a lot more….
Both are big clubs, Aston Villa are a bigger club, because has an european cup and more seasons in the top flight
