If Aston Villa had gone with Steve McClaren when we had the chance, I believe we wouldn’t have had to endure the last two seasons in misery. McClaren has made mistakes in his career but two stand out for me. But if the Villa faithful could have overlooked these mistakes, maybe things would have been different now?
1: The more serious of his two mistakes was when he dropped David Beckham from the England squad, a decision that would see us not qualify for Euro 2008. For me, he deserved every bit of stick he got for making that decision, bad choice Steve!
2: The second of his mistakes was when he decided to use an umbrella to shield himself from the rain, a decision that would earn him the nickname ‘Wally with the Brolly’. Unfairly, this has had more to do with how we perceive this man, than anything else.
There’s just no getting away from it, his first mistake was an absolute clanger. Although, to be fair he realised his mistake and called Beckham back to the squad, but it was too late, England failed to qualify. I think the nickname he acquired in his second mistake is quite funny actually, have you noticed that most if not all the managers in our country, would rather get drenched instead of getting some sort of protection from the rain! They’d rather look like Wally’s soaked like rats in their three-piece suits and tracksuits.
Steve McClaren has come a long way since then. He’s had managerial spells in Holland, Germany and back in his homeland, England. It wasn’t all rosy for him but his determination to stay in management, rather than falling by the wayside, is quite appealing to me.
With all his ups and downs, his time at Derby County has made me come to the decision, that if he’d been given a chance at the Villa, instead of Lambert, he would have done a far better job with the resources that Randy Lerner was offering.
However, when the Villa faithful got wind of the possible appointment of Steve McClaren, the uproar was deafening and to be honest, I didn’t want McClaren either. We’re a funny lot down at the Villa, we throw a strop and Lerner calls off the interview with McClaren; the fans chant Lamberts name at Carrow Road and he gets appointed as Villa manager and look at us now. I’m pretty sure that if he’d been given the chance to manage the Villa, we’d be in a better place than where we are now. UTV

I take it you didn’t agree with me then.
